On Wednesday, August 4th, from 9 am until 11 am, there will be a diaper and baby wipes giveaway at First United Methodist Church in Red Bay. Diapers have been purchased locally using money dispersed from the Community Action CARES fund (pandemic relief). Residents of Franklin, Colbert, and Lauderdale Counties who have babies can pick up the free diapers and wipes at the church during the designated time. Diapers are from newborn size to size 5.
There will be helpers from the church in the parking lot directing the flow of traffic. “This will be a drive-through this year just like it was last year,” said Teresa Fears, secretary at First United Methodist Church. “Those coming to pick up the free diapers and wipes must give their address and the number of babies they need the diapers for,” she said. Fears also said there are stipulations as to who can receive the diapers and baby wipes. “The government regulation is that those receiving the diapers and wipes being given away must live in Franklin, Colbert or Lauderdale Counties to be eligible,” she explained. “This should help young families who are struggling, and we urge all who are eligible in these three counties to take advantage of this,” she said.
Fears went on to say that not only will this give away help families with young children, it is also a help to the local economy. “We bought these items locally,” Fears said. “Half of the diapers and wipes were bought at Big Star and the other half at Piggly Wiggly, both in Red Bay.”
Fears said there is one difference in this year’s event and the one last year. No masks will be required this year. “This year the state mask mandate has been lifted so it is not necessary for those coming to wear a mask,” Fears said. “If they want to wear a mask they can, but it is not a stipulation this year.”
