Qualifying in municipal races has ended, with three political newcomers vying to unseat incumbent mayor Charlene Fancher.
While it appeared on Monday that incumbent Mike Kennedy would face opposition for Council Place 1, his would-be opponent, Haley Gassaway, withdrew her name from the race late Tuesday afternoon. As no one else qualified to run for any Council seats, all incumbent Council members – Jarod Massey, Herbert Trulove, Jason Vinson Brad Bolton and Kennedy – are effectively re-elected for another four-year term.
The race for mayor, however, drew more interest. Seeking to replace Fancher are Johnny Adams, Jerrit Gassaway, and Juston Scott. Neither Adams, Gassaway nor Scott have ever held elected office or served on a city board. Fancher is completing her first term as mayor after having previously served two terms on the Council.
Each candidate will be asked to submit information to The Red Bay News for a public service profile on each candidate prior to the election.
The general election will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25. Should a run-off election be necessary, that would be held on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
