James “J.A.” Blunt

TISHOMINGO, MS – Longtime Baptist pastor, Bro. James A. (J.A.) Blunt, Jr. went to be with Jesus on March 30, 2020. He was 99 years old. He was the youngest of 11 children born to James A. (Dale) Blunt, Sr. and Tinie Blunt of Tishomingo. Bro. J.A. pastored for more than 50 years in Tishomingo County, as well as the Mississippi Delta, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia. He began his ministry at Highland Baptist Church; a church he dearly loved, where he gave his heart to the Lord, and later surrendered to the call of the ministry. He retired from full-time ministry as pastor of Highland Baptist Church in 1983, but continued to interim pastor at several churches around the county. Bro. J.A. continued to be an active member of Highland until just a couple of years ago, as his health began to fail. Bro. J.A. also served as Tishomingo County missionary in the late 50’s. He served the Lord diligently, but will probably be remembered best for the revivals he held, with many giving their lives to the Lord. He had a huge concern for the lost that far outweighed anything in his life. He truly put the Lord first. He will also be remembered as “The pastor that married us,” as he performed many wedding ceremonies during his ministry. In addition to the ministry, he also served his country, and was a WWII Veteran.

A private graveside service was held Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at the Highland Baptist Church cemetery. Bro. Mark Daily officiated. Deaton Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. A public memorial service will be announced at a later date.

He is survived by son, Phillip Blunt (Barbara), daughter, Janet Flurry (Rick), son, Mike Blunt (Judy), daughter & caregiver Margaret Hendrix, grandchildren: Tim Blunt (Jennifer), Mark Blunt (Kristy), Brad Flurry, Jane Phelps (Dave), Jamie Medlin (Melissa), Justin Medlin (Jessica), Tina Hollingsworth (Lance), and Wesley Hendrix (Erieanna), 12 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild, and a special great niece, Rosemary White. He was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie, and 10 brothers and sisters: Ethel Gardner, Ben Blunt, Vernon Blunt, Vardie Blunt, Jess Blunt, John Blunt, Reba Pennington, Herman Blunt, Leon Blunt, and Earline Riddle.
