Tommie Lee “Billy” Powell


TISHOMINGO, MS – Tommie Lee “Billy” Powell, 77, passed away Sunday, October 13, 2019 at North Ms. Medical Center, Iuka, MS. He was born to the late Ben Powell, Sr. and Nina Powell on December 19, 1941. He joined the church at an early age and remained a faithful member at Carter’s Branch Missionary Baptist Church until his health failed. His dedicated services at the church included Chairman of the Deacon Board and Choir President for many years. He attended Carter’s School, Tishomingo, MS, Wick Anderson, Booneville, MS and Carter’s High School, Tishomingo, MS.

He enjoyed singing in the choir, hunting and fishing. He was amiably known as the community barber. His love for the youth afforded him a leadership role in the 4-H Club and Boy Scouts of America. He was retired from Reynolds Metals Alloy, Sheffield, AL.

Services will be Saturday, October 19, 12 p.m. at Carter’s Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Tishomingo, MS with Reverend Anthony Welch officiating. Burial will be in Carter’s Branch Cemetery, Tishomingo, MS. Deaton Funeral Home, Belmont, MS will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his devoted wife of fifty-five years, Myrtis Powell; a loving daughter – Charlotte Powell, both of Tishomingo, MS; four brothers, George (Luevenia) Powell, Ezekiel (Edna) Powell, John (Gerniece) Powell and Bobby (Mildred) Powell, all of Tishomingo, MS; five sisters, Christine (Jimmy) Southward, Virginia Bennett and Margarete (Willie) Robinson, all of Tishomingo, MS; Earnestine (William) Southward of Cherokee, AL and Marvelene Selby of Jackson, MI, a godson, Tre’ Grizzard of Tishomingo, MS; one sister-in-law, Ila Powell of Tishomingo, MS and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ben Powell, Jr. and Willis (Louise) Powell and one sister, Mary (James) Robinson.

Pallbearers will be Randall Southward, Jeffery Powell, Greg Brock, Gwen Powell, David Southward, Donnie Robinson, Jerry Young, Derrick Southward, Derrick Brock, Doran Bennett, Eric Powell, Timothy Southward, Darryl Southward, Billy Ray Young, James Thorne, Craig Powell, DeShaun Powell, Jonathan Powell, Jason Powell, Larry Young and Stephen Powell. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Carter’s Branch Missionary Baptist Church.Visitation will be Saturday, October 19, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Carter’s Branch Missionary Baptist Church.
