Vina Lady Red Devils fall to Hackleburg, thump Tremont

The Vina softball team lost to the Lady Panthers of Hackleburg by a score of 16 to 13 last Tuesday at Vina.

In a game that lasted almost three hours, Vina took a 3-1 lead after the first inning, Vina scored on four base on balls and 6 stolen bases by Abby Hester, Brooke Brown, Kaitlyn King and Scooter Johnson, in the first.

Hackleburg pulled ahead 4-3 and held that lead until the bottom of the third when Vina scored 6 runs on three back to back singles and runs by Baylee Hutcheson, Johnson and Kaley Vandiver. Hannah Johnson was hit by a pitch and Hailey Cantrell laid down a perfect bunt before Hester hit a two run RBI double to left center to score Hannah and Vandiver. Hester would steal her fifth base of the game in the that inning and score on a wild pitch.

The Lady Panthers tied the game in the top of the fourth at 9-9. Vina took a 12-9 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Hester took a walk and stole her seventh and eighth bases of the game as Brown bunted her in, then Brown stole second. King hit a RBI single and after a pass ball, King scored on a single by Scooter.

Hackleburg picked up seven runs in the top of the sixth to regain the lead at 16-12.

Vina’s Cantrell was walked by the Panthers and moved up on a wild pitch before Hester batted a RBI single to right field to cut the lead to 16-13.

Vina held Hackleburg and loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. With the tying run on base, Hannah was called out on strikes and Cantrell went down swinging with Hester in the on deck.

Coach Hester said, “The girls are beginning to play better offensively, but we still have a lot of work to do on defense. They gave a gallant effort at the end of the game and I thought we might pull it out.”

On Thursday, Vina got an early lead when they scored a run in the top of the first against Tremont.

Senior, Abby Hester led off with a single and stole her fifteenth base for the season. Senior Brooke Brown hit a double to knock Hester in.

With two outs in the top of the second, Hailey Cantrell was walked, Hester singled again moving Cantrell to third, Hester stole second, and Brown laid down a perfect bunt to score Cantrell and Vina took a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Sarah Johnson and Kaley Vandiver singled, Greta Raper, Hester, and Brown all walked. Kaitlyn King hit a two run RBI single to center as the Lady Red Devils increased their lead to 6-0. In the top of the fourth,

Johnson and Hester walked. Cantrell was hit by a pitch, Raper and Brown singled and Vandiver sacrificed as Vina increased the lead to 8-0.

In the top of the fifth, VIna’s offense exploded when King, Kayla Thompson, and Baylee Hutcheson were all hit by pitches. Hester, Johnson, Cantrell Kaitlyn Athey were all walked.

Kassidie Gesler hit a two-run RBI single to center and Johnson hit a two-run RBI double to left as Vina closed the deal at 17-0.
